MMZC Transfers Race To The Sea - News & Events
March 19, 2008

The Annual Lighthouse Relay, commonly known as Race to the Sea, has a new owner. In a response to local individuals, Marine and Mountain Zone Corporation developed this initiative in 2003 and, through the Race Committee, have operated it successfully for the past five years.

Recently, the Board decided they had proven the success of this event and it was time to transfer ownership to another local group or organization. Earlier this year, MMZC solicited Expressions of Interest from community and/or organizations who were interested in acquiring permanent ownership of this event.

The Codroy Valley Credit Union submitted a proposal and the Board of Directors of MMZC were very pleased with the elements outlined; which among other things, included new ideas for future expansion of the Race.

Vanessa MacArthur, Chair of MMZC, commented, “The Race to the Sea Event is an extraordinary experience that displays our beautiful communities and lighthouses from Cape Anguille to Rose Blanche. We are very pleased to have nurtured the Race to the Sea where it is today and we are confident that the Codroy Valley Credit Union will nurture it to grow bigger and better than ever before!”

The Codroy Valley Credit Union is looking forward to this new challenge and already has some new marketing ideas to broaden awareness of the Race. As Marketing and Sales Officer at the Credit Union, Randi Alexander stated, “The Codroy Valley Credit Union considers this to be a phenomenal event that not only promotes the tourism of the West Coast, but also incorporates healthy living choices, and provides the opportunity for community involvement. We believe this to be an excellent event to overtake.”

The Codroy Valley Credit Union acquired partnership from the Port aux Basques Chamber of Commerce. The Codroy Valley Credit Union and the Chamber will work collaboratively to market this race and gain exposure for both partners. The main purpose of this race is to promote the tourism of the West Coast, incorporating healthy living choices, and supporting the community. With this purpose in mind, the Chamber of Commerce was the obvious choice for a collaborative partner.

The Credit Union encourages everyone to consider participating in this exciting event on August 9th, 2008. If anyone would like to become a volunteer, please contact Randi Alexander, at 955-3051.
