Introduction

The southwest coast is home to mountains and coastline. Appropriately the area has been named the Marine and Mountain Zone (MMZ). The Marine and Mountain Zone Corporation (MMZC) is one of the 20 Regional Economic Development Boards (REDBs) throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  The MMZC represents Zone 10, the Southwest Coast, which encompasses 19 communities from North Branch to Grand Bruit. The Corporation is the lead economic development agency in the region.

This economic zone boasts a vast quantity of natural resources, and a rugged beauty that appeals to residents and guests alike. Picturesque mountains are part of the natural beauty of the Marine and Mountain Zone. With hiking becoming an increasingly popular sport, MMZ is a popular destination for the seasoned and amateur hiker. The area has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast.

The North Atlantic Ocean borders a large portion of the Zone. As a result, the ocean has been incorporated into the livelihoods of many people who reside in the communities along the rugged coastline. As fishing became an increasingly important way of life in early Newfoundland, smaller communities began to form in areas where fish was plentiful. The Zone is home to many coastal communities, characterized by colorful houses, fishing stages and dories.

Port aux Basques is the largest centre in the Marine and Mountain Zone. It is referred to as the Gateway to Newfoundland. Port aux Basques is also home to the two largest super ferries in North America and has a large ice free harbour.

The Codroy Valley is framed by the Long Range Mountains, the Anguille Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, making it one of the most scenic areas in the province.

In addition to the region being a prime business location, it is also a place to build a healthier lifestyle, with a pristine environment, clean air and water, land at favorable prices and friendly people.
